HEALTHY EATING

Rationale
The food we eat can have a major effect on our health, physical well-being and ability
to learn. Proper and adequate nutrition is linked to educational outcomes and health
throughout life.
Purposes
- To support the
teaching of the N.Z. Health and Physical Education curriculum.
- To increase the
knowledge of school staff, children and parents / caregivers about food
and nutrition.
- To develop a
school environment that supports good nutrition.
- To monitor /
control the type of food children are bringing and buying to consume at
school.
Guidelines
- Food brought to school or served at school on a daily basis is to be consistent with the
New Zealand Food and Nutritional Guidelines (refer Appendix 1).
- Food and drink brought to school by children will not include any foods and drinks from
fast food outlets as well as roll-ups, potato chips, cheezles, burger rings,
Twisties,
sweets, jelly crystals, instant noodles, fizzy drinks (other foods are being researched
and may be added).
- Class programmes should reflect the school's emphasis on healthy eating.
- Staff and parents / caregivers are expected to role model healthy eating within the
school environment and on all school outings.
- The daily lunch scheme in the form of Combos will be organised by the lunch room
manager.
- Adult education will be provided through in-service workshops, regular newsletters, Gala
Day stands and community organisations.
- Maintain links with other Health Promoting Schools regarding Healthy Eating issues.
