HEALTHY EATING POLICY

Rationale

The food we eat can have a major effect on our health, physical well-being and ability to learn. Proper and adequate nutrition is linked to educational outcomes and health throughout life.

Purposes

  • To support the teaching of the N.Z. Health and Physical Education curriculum.
  • To increase the knowledge of school staff, children and parents / caregivers about food and nutrition.
  • To develop a school environment that supports good nutrition.
  • To monitor / control the type of food children are bringing and buying to consume at school.

Guidelines

  • Food brought to school or served at school on a daily basis is to be consistent with the New Zealand Food and Nutritional Guidelines (refer Appendix 1).
  • Food and drink brought to school by children will not include any foods and drinks from fast food outlets as well as roll-ups, potato chips, cheezles, burger rings, Twisties, sweets, jelly crystals, instant noodles, fizzy drinks (other foods are being researched and may be added).
  • Class programmes should reflect the school's emphasis on healthy eating.
  • Staff and parents / caregivers are expected to role model healthy eating within the school environment and on all school outings.
  • The daily lunch scheme in the form of Combos will be organised by the lunch room manager.
  • Adult education will be provided through in-service workshops, regular newsletters, Gala Day stands and community organisations.
  • Maintain links with other Health Promoting Schools regarding Healthy Eating issues.

Conclusion

Through a Healthy Eating programme the children and families of St. Anne's will develop an awareness of food that is nutritious, safe and sufficient in quantity, which in turn will lead to life long health and physical wellbeing.
