Literacy

Literacy is the 'cornerstone' of all our learning at St Anne's. In all curriculum areas and in all our interactions literacy is ever present. We see it in Religious Education, our prayers and our Mercy Values. We see it in the way we communicate and respond socially. We even see maths in the way we express our Mathematical and scientific learning.

In our literacy programmes you will see elements of oral literacy, literacy in texts we read and in the written form that students produce.

We have three key documents that we use to guide the way we design our Literacy:

This is our guiding document. We adapt the key learning concepts to ensure they are engaging and relevant for our students at their level of ability.

These describe and illustrate the literacy-related knowledge, skills, and attitudes that students need to draw on in order to meet the reading and writing demands of the New Zealand Curriculum from Year 1 to Year 10. Teachers use the progressions to plan, prepare and identify children's next steps in learning.

These help us measure how well students are doing in Literacy. It gives us an opportunity to talk with students about where they are now and helps us to focus on what key learning they may need to make progress in literacy.

With students working in our Innovative learning Environments (ILE’s) there are huge opportunities for our students in terms of being able to select and communicate literacy experiences across the curriculum. The digital environment helps us to design literacy learning that gives children more and more independence and choice of learning pathways, all within a well-designed, and well structured teaching and learning programme.

At St Anne’s we continue our great practices in literacy such as teacher modelling, guided (group) reading, taskboard learning tasks and literacy follow-ups. At the same time we are able to enhance this with new teaching methods such as, can do and must do, essential tasks, independent tasks, flipped learning videos and digital learning that stimulates and engages students in literacy and peer learning. It is an exciting time for our students and we can’t wait to share our journey through literacy with you!
